Clearway Device is an oral device providing relief to people with sleep-disordered breathing – from snorers to people with more severe problems including nasal obstruction. The uniquely-designed device gently advances the lower jaw, but also has a separate airway which delivers air directly to the back of the throat, bypassing the tongue and soft palate.
Did you know that an estimated 1.5 million Australians suffer with sleep disorders? And more than half of these have the more serious condition of sleep apnoea. Of the total number of people with sleep apnoea, 24 per cent are female and 76 per cent are male. Many are undiagnosed.
In 2013, Oventus started working with the CSIRO to design theOventus Clearway DeviceTM – a new style of bespoke mouthguard – that has changed the lives of snorers and people with sleep-disordered breathing.
The Oventus Clearway Device’s design is the world’s first and only sleep therapy which directs the air flow through to the back of the throat and bypasses nasal, soft palate and tongue obstructions.
The device incorporates a ‘duckbill’ which extends from the mouth like a whistle and creates separate airway that allows air to flow directly to the back of the mouth.
Using CAD software to create a 3D drawing of the patient’s mouth and bite, Oventus then uses 3D printing technology to manufacture a custom-made medical-grade mouthguard from titanium.
Oventus is currently conducting early research into a tongue retainer working with the Oventus Clearway DeviceTM to retain the tongue to further clear the airway for some patients. The Research & Development team are also researching into future connecting the Oventus Clearway DeviceTM with a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine, but without a mask.
This 3D scanning and printing technology will soon be used to make other custom-made mouthguard devices:
Oventus Clearway Sport – will be used for people in contact and non-contact sports acting as a protection mouthguard as well as a device to increase air intake, just like breathing deeply without the thought and effort.
Oventus Clearway Active – will be used for people with sleep-disordered breathing when they are active to overcome mild fatigue, such as when driving.
