Here at QLD Startup Showcase we are on a mission to promote some of the amazing stories happening in the community sector.
Here are some facts about the community sector (From a QUT fact sheet):
- There are 600,000 not for profit organisations in Australia
- The sector makes a significant contribution to the Australian economy. In 2012–13 it accounted for $54,796 million or 3.9 per cent of GVA/3.8 per cent of GDP5 (which does not include the contribution of volunteers) – a contribution more than twice as large as the entire economic contribution of the state of Tasmania; and larger than the agricultural, forestry and fishing industries (2.4 per cent) and the information, media and telecommunications and media industries (3 per cent). In 2006–07 the sector contributed 3.2 per cent, and in 1999–2000, 3.3 per cent.
Innovation for the delivery of community services is vital to the wellbeing of society as a whole. So, if you see people or companies doing innovative things from the physical world (such as Orange Sky Laundry) through to the online world (such as MyCommunityDirectory), then please let us know.
If you are looking to get into the community sector startup space then please check out ImpactAcademy - an incubator for community startups, as well as checking out QUT's non-profit and social enterprise centre.
There are a lot of good things happening if you wish to be part of it.
