Des Jacobson – Solutions Architect and Founder –
I grew up in my father’s workshop surrounded by laths, bandsaws and welders. My father offered lots of encouragement, but always demanded that if a job was worth doing it was worth doing properly.
At high school I became a passionate rower that culminated with being selected as the Bow-man for my school’s First VIII. At the end of the rowing season I was given the opportunity to follow my dream as an elite lightweight rower, however family pressure, work and study commitments took over.
I initially studied electronics at Queensland University of Technology before starting my own business developing microprocessor controlled theatrical effects. The business although enjoyable struggled due to a lack of local markets. After working for several electronics manufacturors I eventually made the transition to computing, initially in network support and then on to software development.
After several career changes I secured a position at one of the world’s largest software companies as a pre-sales technical specialist focusing on database technologies. In 1999 they entered a crew in a corporate regatta and after one stroke my passion for rowing rekindled.
Over the next few years I competed as a 'Masters' rower at several Melbourne clubs and dabbled in a bit of coaching. It was at this stage I began to investigate ways I could provide better feedback to both the coach and crew.
With my unique skills in electronics, software, large databases and machining I began experimenting with ways to measure crew performance.
In 2005 I was offered a contract that would allow me to spend several days per week devoted to my passion of developing rowing technology.
It was at this point Oar Inspired was born.
